Twig Terrariums

It's a small yet screwball world after all for Katy Maslow and Michelle Inciarrano, the quirky best friend duo behind Brooklyn-based company Twig Terrariums. First conceived as a craft project idea five years ago, their botanical creations ended up quickly taking over their apartments, leaving them no choice but to start selling them at the Brooklyn Flea Market. Fast forward a New York Times story, a namesake twig found in Prospect Park, and a terrarium commissioned for auteur Martin Scorsese later, the Twig Terrarium women have created a mini empire filled with low-maintenance flora and their unique sense of humor.

Not always the image of bucolic peace, Michelle and Katy's creations can depict anything from mob hit scenes to proposal recreations. "There was a husband who wanted to get a gift for his wife," explains Katy about a particularly memorable customer. "They had parachuted as newlyweds, and the husband got caught in a tree while the wife landed safely, so we recreated them with the husband caught in a little twig tree." The smile-inducing quality of Twig Terrariums is clearly linked to the love the two founders have of their work and friendship--but that doesn’t mean it’s all mud and games. Says Michelle about their company ethos, “Even if we’re working with dirt and little people, we still take all this very seriously! It’s paramount that our customers are happy and that they’re happy with their little green worlds.”
