“Everyday, I try to make decisions that protect Mother Earth.”
Susan Rockefeller’s jewelry is more than just another accessory. It represents a story and a mission that Susan is passionate about. “The jewelry, for me, in a sense creates a social platform to talk about environmental issues,” Susan said about her namesake fine jewelry.
Her intricate, ocean-inspired pieces are often being ooh-ed and ah-ed over while also bringing attention to the greater theme of environmental preservation. “I thought, what a great way to start the ocean conversation if I create some beautiful jewelry that reminds me and others of the mystery and magic of the sea,” she said.
Susan spent her younger years on the beach, developing a fascination with the sea with the help of her parents— her mother, an anthropologist, and her father an active conservationist. “The tide, waves, the sea... All these things bring wonder to your imagination, and you can’t help but be amazed at the mysteries and intricacies of nature.”
This fascination is present in everything she does, whether it’s her work as a jewelry designer, or her work as documentary filmmaker. Her award-winning films examine environmental and social issues with stories about a variety of topics such as the effects of carbon dioxide on our oceans and a film about Alaska done for the Alaska Conservation foundation, which is where she met and fell in love with her husband who did the writing and narration for the film.
Now, she’s harnessing the power of commerce to spur a dialogue about the way we’re impacting our seas and land. Susan is now growing a company that has a blend of sustainability and business, while emphasizing an environmentally conscious commerce cycle. “Commerce is never going to stop. It’s how you innovate and create something that’s beautiful that can be passed down from generation to generation,” she said.
