“Women have so many wonderful options, and as a designer, it's wonderful to be that person who is both the customer and the designer.”

The Madhya Farooqui Tour de Fashion includes a fashion design education at Parson’s, a five year stint as a fashion editor at Cosmopolitan magazine, years as a sourcing, design, and development consultant for companies like Harvey Nichols, and continues with a namesake jewelry line. But what really influenced it all was her tour of the world as the daughter of a UN diplomat. Having travelled extensively through her childhood collecting jewelry and global knickknacks, Madhya embraced an international aesthetic and a love for old school craftsmanship which serve as a cornerstone for her fine jewelry line.

“I was in Jaipur, and I came across these carved tourmaline butterflies, and I just fell in love with them. I was absolutely determined to center something around it,” she says about her very first piece. The result was an ornate set of earrings that combined polki diamonds--an Indian traditional rough-cut diamond--with a more modern design. Since then, her shiny goods have been seen in glossies like Elle and Harper’s Bazaar as well as on the arms of the glamorous (Brooke Shields!). But she’s also focused on expanding her line to include more everyday pieces that can be worn by the people in her life and, most importantly, herself. “Women have so many wonderful options, and as a designer, it’s wonderful to be that person who is both the customer and the designer.”
