“Fashion really wasn't something that was on the table in those days. Everything was very simple. I feel like it's been this fun journey of building that whole category”
Kim Seybert’s intricate and elegant designs are the equivalent of couture for the tabletop. Gracing editorial tables and dinner party spreads for the sartorially inclined, her painstakingly beaded napkin rings and placemats jump off the set table, often overshadowing the food that it accompanies. “Fashion really wasn’t something that was on the table in those days. Everything was very simple. It was very traditional. I feel like it’s been this fun journey of building that whole category,” she said of her decision to venture into tabletop accessories. Her vibrant wares came at a time when grown-up dinners were white table affairs-- “I remember I had a dinner party and my dinnerware at the time was white with a gold band, and I had these embroidered tablecloths from China, but they were white, and I had a lot of fashion friends over for dinner, and we were saying that we should be dyeing the mashed potatoes green because we needed some color on this table!”
With young entrepreneurial instincts, Kim started her first company straight after studying fashion design designing uniforms, but inexperience led her to decide to work in larger companies for years before starting her eponymous design firm. After the eveningwear company she was designing for went out of business, Kim started redoing her apartment, making pillows, cocktail napkins, and coasters, and with friends offering to buy them off her table and couch, she was urged to take her products to “Bendel’s Viewing Day”, where a buyer picked them up followed by buyers from Bergdorf Goodman and Sak’s. Now, Kim Seybert the company has expanded to decorate every corner of the home from shower curtains to glassware. And like so many companies we love, Kim Seybert is committed to giving back to the community by donating products for charitable events and supporting DIFFA, a foundation dedicated to fighting AIDS and Gods Love We Deliver, a meal delivery service for the sick and in need.
